But, alas, it is only “almost.” By the time the last three episodes roll around, House of Cards’ final season has abruptly buried itself in a whole host of weird, borderline anti-feminist tropes. La La Land is in my top five favorite movies and easily my favorite movie set in Los Angeles, closely followed by Valentine’s Day. I have visited several filming locations from La La Land including Angels Flight, the Smoke House Restaurant, and the Lighthouse Cafe. The apartment that Mia lives in is located out in Long Beach and is stunning! Finding filming locations from movies and TV shows has become one of my favorite things to do. Lately, I have been visiting a lot of famous TV and movie houses in Los Angeles.

Despite the fact that Netflix cut ties with Kevin Spacey following the sexual assault allegations levied against him, his House of Cards character Frank Underwood remains a significant part of the show’s sixth and final season. It was clear that House of Cards’ conclusion was always going to be about Frank versus Claire, with Doug as a free agent, until Spacey’s actions came to light. Doug’s explanation of Frank’s death — Frank came to the White House in a rage, planning to kill Claire, so Doug killed him instead — feels for all the world like what the original, planned series finale must have been. And if you ever have to rewrite a final season of television as quickly as this show did, it’s inevitable that you’ll lean on your original material just a bit. House of Cards has never really been good at reflecting the current political moment, shooting for exaggerated theater instead, but this premiere is certainly dabbling in feminist perspectives. Quite literally, because after Doug draws blood from the president when pressing Frank’s sharpened letter opener to her neck a fit of rage, she uses it against him. Claire, who by now has survived two assassination attempts on her this season, stabs her would-be killer in the gut and suffocates him. Claire arrives at the military base, and her speech is focused and impassioned. She speaks of fighting tyranny on all levels, be it abroad or at home, and vows to not let oligarchs take over Washington (which is surely a shot at Bill Shepherd). She also breaks the fourth wall at this point, letting us know that, unlike Frank, she’s going to tell us the truth. In this previous trailer, we first learned the final fate of the show’s former star and main character in Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood. Our emphasis on final is quite purposeful, since the trailer reveals the show’s post-Spacey strategy of killing off Frank. (It’s not a spoiler if the show is promoting that narrative.) So I understand that I may not be the best judge of what House of Cards fans look for in the series. But all the same, I cannot imagine being a fan of the show, getting excited for the sixth and final season, watching season five’s buildup to that sixth and final season, and then sitting down to watch and getting ... So when a friend of mine posted a picture of this house I knew I had to see it in person. It was a very short drive from Casa Walsh and was close to Eaton Canyon where I was hiking later that day. This house is picturesque and has a fabulous fairytale vibe to it.
