The name popped up for the first time last year when the Blue Planet was pre-selected for the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Challenge Award (which it ended up winning!). Now, a year later, we’ve finally had a chance to enjoy a hands-on with the fascinating CIGA Design U-Series Blue Planet in titanium and determine if it is any good. The special caliber used in the Blue Planet has a power reserve of 40 hours and an accuracy of +30/-15 seconds per day. CIGA Design doesn’t specify what the caliber is or is based on. However, it’s visible through the exhibition case back beneath the printed text indicating the Blue Planet’s GPHG award from 2021.
My only actual gripe regarding the Blue Planet is the dead date position when pulling out the crown. For as unique as the mechanics of the watch are, I was reminded that it may be nothing more than a module set over a basic workhorse caliber every time I pulled the crown out. I wanted to stay seduced by the main show of the watch, which is all dial-side. Back in April, I wrote a piece featuring various watches from China. Not watches merely made in China, but those that are emphatically Chinese in origin and manufacture — and proudly so. The radical design and strong statement — not to mention quirky yet effective mechanics — make this piece look and wear like a much more expensive watch than it actually is.

Purpose is always a good look, in my opinion, and these elements could (theoretically) also be integrated in an attractive way (using color, perhaps). You want to look closely at details like this — and when you do (such as with a loupe or macro lens) you find that they’re not sloppily rendered. Still, step back, and the globe motif is recognizable even from a distance. This is a weird but captivating watch — one that’s chock full of talking points if nothing else. At 46mm-wide, the lugless circular case of the CIGA Design Blue Planet – Gilding Version offers the same form and dimensions as its predecessor, but that’s where the similarities end. Although the smoothly rounded, UFO-like shape may be familiar, the new polished black zirconium oxide ceramic case material gives this soft shape an inky new sheen and an even more futuristic feel.
